Work at Junk Koala

We're an early-stage company opening our first markets. Hiring follows those openings, so most roles become available market by market.

No open positions listed yet

Junk Koala has not opened its first markets, so there are no vacancies to post. Rather than list roles that do not exist yet, this page will fill in as hiring starts — and you can register interest now so we have your details when it does.

Where we hire

The four areas we build around

  • Crew and drivers

The people who do the work: loading, carrying, disassembly and disposal, and dealing with customers directly in their homes and businesses. Hired locally as each market opens.

  • Operations

Dispatch, scheduling, quoting and the day-to-day running of a market — the coordination that decides whether crews spend their day working or waiting.

  • Customer support

Answering questions, handling bookings, resolving problems and keeping customers informed when something changes.

  • Head office

Marketing, technology, finance and partner development for the national platform behind the crews.

What we look for

Four things that matter more than a résumé

Junk removal is not a hard job to describe and it is a hard job to do well. These are the things that separate the two.
  1. You turn up

This is the whole job, and it is the one thing a company cannot teach. A customer has taken a morning off work and moved their car. A crew that arrives when it said it would is already most of the way to a good review.

  2. You treat the house like it isn't yours

The sofa is going to a landfill, so the only thing that can be damaged on the way out is the customer's home — banisters, door casings, hardwood, elevator walls. The people who do this well slow down at the tight point instead of forcing it.

  3. You can explain a no

Crews routinely find paint, propane or a fridge nobody disconnected. Saying "we can't take that, here's where it goes" without making the customer feel stupid is a skill, and it is the difference between a complaint and a repeat booking.

  4. You lift like you want a career

A sleeper sofa on a staircase is how people end up injured. We would rather a crew take an extra ten minutes and a second person than move fast once and be off work for six weeks.

How hiring works

What happens after you get in touch

No trick questions and no drawn-out process. Four steps, and you can walk away at any of them.
  1. Register your interest

Tell us the market you are in and the kind of work you have done. We keep it against that market rather than a general pile.

  2. We get in touch when your market opens

Hiring follows market launches, so this can be a wait. We would rather say that than keep a job posting up that nobody can start.

  3. A conversation about the actual work

What the days look like, what the physical demands genuinely are, availability, and whether you drive. Honest on both sides — the job suits some people and not others.

  4. A working day before either side commits

You spend a day with a crew on real jobs. It tells you more about whether you want this than an interview does, and it tells us more than a résumé does.

What the work is like

This is a physical business

Crew work is genuinely demanding. It is lifting, carrying, stairs and weather, and it involves working inside people’s homes during moments that are sometimes stressful for them — a downsize, an estate, a move that has not gone to plan.

The people who do it well are careful with a customer’s house, straight about what a job involves, and reliable about turning up. That last one matters more than anything on a résumé.

For head office roles, this is early-stage work: the systems are being built rather than maintained, and the person who joins is shaping how the company operates rather than following a manual.
